![]() ![]() There are also several cool features and set pieces that fans of the universe will immediately appreciate, such as Belaram the Eagle and Rivendell.įinal Verdict: Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a mediocre title that will keep fans of the franchise happy but that’s about it. The game’s plot is fairly straightforward and coincides with the books/movies that take place in Middle-earth, and fans of the franchise will be pleased with the presence of such characters as Aragorn, Legolas and Frodo who make cameo appearances in Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Plowing through the game’s story while keeping your team intact takes a good amount of communication and planning in some of the game’s more difficult areas. Playing with two friends, locally or online, is where the game really shows its muscle. That being said, I truly believe in order to get the full experience of Lord of the Rings: War in the North, one must play with two human companions. This game features some of the best in-game companion AI that I have ever seen. Rather than sticking you with incompetent companions, Lord of the Rings: War in the North gives you fully-functional and aware teammates who heal when needed and can fend for themselves in battle. ![]() When in-battle, the support AI is phenomenal, and here is where the game really shines. I rarely needed to utilize the block or dodge buttons and the long distance attacks have a hit radius similar that is too big to fail. As wave upon wave of enemy comes towards you and your fellowship, the game turns into a two button affair. While there are definitely some highlights to the gameplay, such as the role-playing elements (leveling up, weapon/armor customization), the single player campaign feels more like an endless hack-and-slash rather than engaging action-adventure title. In addition to that, characters are often heard saying the same things in battle and some of the lines, such as “is everyone unhurt?” make me think that an orc wrote the script for this game. Interactions with NPCs often result in the same questions and answers being force-fed to you under the guise of a BioWare-style selection system. The voice acting and the sound effects, both in and out of battle, represent some of the game’s stronger points.įor what the game does correctly with regards to voice acting, there is a huge pitfall, and that is stale, repetitive and often times uninteresting dialogue. The character models are excellent and animations are fluid. ![]() The lush landscapes and environments are some of the best that have ever been seen in a LotR game. The game’s graphics and audio are very good. ![]()
